Party finds themselves locked up in Baron Ironfist's dungeon. They wake up one morning to the sound of an explosion from the castle above them, and take the opportunity to escape. Along the way, they meet (and kill) the imprisoned goblin king Grolsch and the Baron's torturer. The party escapes through some oversized tunnels which look like the work of oversized rats, but turn out to be due to a goblin tribe now led by their shaman Bex. Bex creates a Rat King to attack them, but is handily dispatched by Vanth and Haela while Lupin and Firenzia distract the monster. They then exit the tunnels and make their way to the nearest city, Summershore.
Once in Summershore, the party makes its way to the local tavern, where they engage in a drinking contest with an orc named Larry, who promptly drinks Firenzia under the table but otherwise seems pretty amiable, and who directs them to some suitable lodging (Bob's B&B), since the inn across the street is run by a xenophobic man who charges exorbitant fees. They also meet a drunken wizard named Grimblegrum, who complains about the Order of Yendor. It seems that they'd hired him to do some enchantment work for them, a kind of password spell.
The next day they begin looking around, visiting the Temple of Yendor (where they ask about joining the Order), the Marketplace (which has an empty job board), and finally Otto, who offers them some money if they'll steal the Amulet of Yendor from the Temple. They accept, and Otto gives them the password (which he obtained from Grimblegrum for a price) to the upper level of the Temple where the Amulet is kept, adorning a statue of the goddess herself. Haela and VAnth arrive first and take up positions in a prayer room near the back. Firenzia and Lupin arrive later, and Firenzia causes a drunken uproar, giving the other two the chance to head upstairs and steal the Amulet. But they find themselves thwarted by an electrical field protecting the Amulet, and flee the Temple before they are discovered.
On the following day, they seek out Grimblegrum and ask him about the electrical field. He says it is not his work and that he knows nothing about it, but does recall the Priests performing an odd ritual involving the pillars surrounding the statue. Firenzia teaches Vanth the Hidey Hole spell, so that she and Haela can infiltrate the Temple again. Meanwhile, the boys go off to the tavern and get involved in a drunken brawl with a local ne'er-do-well and his entourage. The girls, once inside the Temple, disarm the protective electric field spell and quickly obtain the Amulet. But now that they have it, they become wary of Otto's intentions. Lupin and Firenzia go to the blacksmith and negotiate a higher price for the Amulet (1000 gp, double the original amount offered). Still suspicious, they decide to keep an eye on Otto and attempt to discover who his mysterious buyer is.

The party splits up; Vanth and Haela attempt to follow Otto, while Lupin and Firenzia check out the Baron's castle. They find the place a ruins, and all the guards have taken up lodging in the city. The girls, on the other hand, follow Otto into the Sewers, where they immediately lose him. But not before encountering a hidden tomb and its undead inhabitant. They regroup with Firenzia and Lupin, and venture back down. After fighting off some sewer slimes, a tentacled creature under a drain grate, and a nest of C.H.U.D.s...

... the party discovers the body of a woman. Further searching of the sewers reveals a tremendous white worm looming over Otto's corpse. The party handily dispatches the worm and inspects the body. It seems that Otto was murdered, not by the worm, but by a single knife wound to the heart. It remains unclear whether he was killed in the sewers themselves, or somewhere else, and then was dragged to the sewers in order to dispose of the body. Emerging from the sewers, the party finds themselves in an unfamiliar part of Summershore. After a little wandering around, they are confronted by a street gang who demands their money. Vanth casts Hidey Hole to conceal the party, and they succeed in sneaking away from the mystified thugs. Then they retreat to Bob's B&B and get some much-needed sleep.

The party heads to the tavern to ask around about the triangular pendant they found on Otto's body. There, a dwarf laughs at them and tells them Shazora is a fairytale, a boogeyman. But it's enough to pique their interest, so they head to the Temple in order to question a priest further. The priest tells them the story of Shazora and the Order of Endless Night. The priest also attempts to hire the party to recover the Amulet of Yendor, which the Temple has recently discovered to have been replaced with a replica. The party accepts the task, but do not immediately come forward with the Amulet. Instead, they then begin to travel to Galfindor in order to locate Shazora. At the Summershore city gates, however, they are attacked by OEN cultists, who quickly defeat the heroes and rob them of the Amulet of Yendor. They awaken in the care of Bob, who managed to find them in time to save their lives. Lacking the Amulet, and now aware of how powerful Shazora's forces are, the party finds themselves at a loss as to what to do next.
